First hospital admission (3 months old)

On April 12^th 2018, Vincent was admitted at CHEO for an UTI (Urinary Tract Infection).  We had decided to bring him to the clinic because he seemed to be in a lot of pain and he hadn’t peed for four hours.  The doctor at the clinic sent us to CHEO as he thought there was something more going on.  We got to CHEO at around 7:30pm.  We waited an hour before being transferred to the room.

There seemed to have been an emergency, as we waited almost two hours before seeing a medical student.  She looked him over and then went to talk to the staff doctor (attending).  At around 11pm the attending came to talk to us. Vincent was happy and she wanted to send us home.  Since it had already been nine hours since he peed, they decided to pass a catheter for a little bit of pee to test it.  At around 1 am they came to see us and told us there was something off with his urine test, and he was being admitted due to his age.  I was really stressed at this time as there was something wrong with my baby. That’s when the overnight became chaotic.  The nurse and a worker came in to set an IV in his arm. Vincent was really tired and upset. Every time I would put him to sleep he would be woken up.  It took them 30 minutes to set it.  At the same time, they did blood work.

After an hour they came wanting to do more blood work, as his blood gas and potassium was off. After redoing the tests those numbers came back normal. Around 4 am is when the doctors from the floor came to look over Vincent to make sure he is healthy enough to be moved. After repeating my story to every doctor (five different ones), Vincent was brought to the 5th floor at 6:45am. Vincent started peeing again around 8am on Friday. Pat and I were exhausted as we hadn't slept yet. Vincent's grand-maman (Pat's Mom) came to spend the day with Vincent in his room while Pat and I went to take a well-needed nap.

When Pat and I got back to the hospital around 4:30pm we got to talk with the doctor, who told us Vincent’s test had come back as positive for RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus).  Luckily, an hour later they came to told us the slow (more in-depth) RSV test came back negative. Therefore he doesn’t have RSV.  While talking to the doctor, she told us that they went through his ultrasound pictures from when he was six weeks old, and he has hydronephrosis on the left side.  They decided to redo the ultrasound which was done on Sunday.  After confirming that he still had hydronephrosis, they decided they would request to get a VCUG done.  (Note: A VCUG is when they insert a catheter with iodine liquid.  They fill his bladder and take x-rays. After pulling the catheter, they take x-rays as he pees.) This is done in order to check to see if he has bladder reflux.  (Note: Bladder reflux is when he pees there is some splash back to his kidneys.)  Vincent does have a mild case of bladder reflux. He will be seeing an urologist on April 30^th.   Vincent was sent home on oral antibiotics for his e-coli bacteria UTI.

Vincent had a hip ultrasound the week before his admission. While he was there we got results.  His left hip is slightly misaligned. He will be seeing an orthopedic specialist on May 16^th. I will update on more details of the specialist as I find out more.

At the beginning of February, Vincent went to get his first photo shoot with his grand-papa.  Vincent was a month old, but he was still calm enough to be good.  I decided to feed him before to see if he would have fallen asleep.  I am proud to say it worked.  We decided to take his alone pictures first and then to family pictures.  Here are the best ones from the photo shoot.

Month 1 and 2

Month 1

Vincent had a very hectic month when he was one month old. From his grand-maman’s Saumure’s 60^th birthday, to him meeting his great grandma Hupé, to seeing a Cardiologist, and then going for his first eight day road-trip to Sudbury.

 

For his grand-maman’s Saumure’s birthday, we went out to Rideau club one night and Casey's another night. Vincent was an angel and slept through the dinner at Rideau Club.  He was also dressed up in a cute bow tie. For the dinner at Casey’s Vincent got to snuggle and meet some friends and family members.  Vincent was a complete angel throughout the evening.  On the day he turned one month old, he also got to meet his great grandma. She was able to hold him and love him.

Vincent has a heart murmur. The pediatrician that saw, and released, him from Montfort wanted his heart to be checked out. He went to see Dr. Seschadri twice. The second time he had an echo cardiogram. The Doctor didn’t see anything wrong and decided that she didn’t have to see him again.

In mid February, Vincent and I went to Sudbury for eight days. He got to see many different family members.  We had a lot of fun and he got many snuggles.  His cousins Ilaria and Zeah loved him. They were very helpful when it comes to giving him baths, getting him dressed, diaper changes, feeding and burping him. Vincent had a hectic month 1.

Month 2

Vincent had a very quiet month 2. After getting his shots, he was sick for three days. Once he started feeling better from them, he caught the norovirus.  That put him sick for two weeks. He then caught his first cold. Vincent had lost weight therefore his pediatrician was worried.  He had to see her a week later for a follow-up, where he gained weight.

This month Vincent learned how to smile and chat. He is definitely all smiles when he wakes up in the morning. We also started him sleeping in his own room. The last new thing we started this month was putting him in the stroller without his car seat.
